William and Elizabeth

Family Trees

Great Great Grandfather William Vayro was born at Angram Cote farm in Ellingstring and baptised 18 th September 1825 at East Witton.  His parents were James Vayro and Mary Walker (details elsewhere on JRVayro Family 6) and he was the fifth child of a total of eight.

(G3) William Varo married Elizabeth Berry on 2nd May 1849 in the Parish Church of St Andrew Newcastle on Tyne.  William was shown as bachelor, of age, (actually 24) and his father was shown as James Vayro, farmer.  Elizabeth was shown as spinster, of age, father shown as Henry Berry.  Both were living in Jesmond, Newcastle on Tyne, at the time of their marriage.

For many years there had been some confusion resulting from the fact that there was another William Vayro who married a cousin Esther Vayro at East Witton Church on 16 th September 1850. However both marriage certificates were obtained and there was definitely another totally different person named Esther Vayro, and that Esther was not simply Elizabeth’s familiar or “nickname”.

On the 1851 Census for the Leyburn area William was recorded as head of the family, aged 25, (born 1825) farming Tranmire farm and its 130 acres. Elizabeth was aged 23 (born 1828) at Ellingstring, and with a son John aged 1 year old.

On examining the East Witton Baptisms register on Micro Film 829 I found a total of twelve separate entries for their children.

(G3) William died at Hunslet near Leeds in January 1907 at the age of 82, and was buried on 30 th January 1907 at East Witton Churchyard. Elizabeth had died on 31 st January 1899.
